Prokaryotes were the first organisms to evolve on Earth and they still have the simplest cell structures without compartmentalization. Bacteria are prokaryotes. They are mostly small in size, unicellular and are found almost everywhere – in soil, in water, on our skin, in our intestines and even in the pools of hot water in volcanic soils.
Bacteria are highly successful organisms:
There a 3 types of bacteria, photosynthetic, chemosynthetic and parasitic, which rely on light energy, chemical energy and the life force of another being, respectively.
While the structure and features of cell will vary for life in different environments, all prokaryotes have a cell wall, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, 70S ribosomes, and naked DNA.
